Drawing the Picture of the Problem: A Narrative Study
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burçin TÜRKCAN
Res. Asst. Bilal ÖNCÜL
Res. Asst. Mahmut BOZKURT

In this research, it was aimed to reveal the experiences of using a visual arts to improve the problem solving ability of a teacher in the context of professional development. For this purpose, a new method proposing the visualisation and concretization of mathematical problems and thus developing the thinking skills has been examined. This method is called Japanese mathematics by the participating teacher. The study, seems to be important in terms of being an example of developing thinking skills through arts education, starting from the experience of the teacher, the first practitioner in Turkey. Art education is not only a
discipline of arts courses but also a method that can be used in the content of all courses. In this context, art education can be seen as an important application area for interdisciplinaryeducation. The method of study involved a mathematics course taught through arts education with an interdisciplinary approach. Narrative research was used in the study. Semi-structured interviews have been used as data collection tools. In this sense, data were collected through three separate interviews conducted with participant teachers at different times. Narrative analysis was used in the analysis of the obtained data. In this direction, such findings as the participant teacher has met with this method to supoort the school success of her child, this Japan origin method has developed all other thinking skills, in particular problem solving, embodied the concepts abstracted for children, facilitated the imagination and originally called “donguri” method, is converted “Japanese mathematics” because of the mathematical anxiety in our country have been reached. It has also been observed that this method can be considered as an alternative for the students who are raised in Turkey due to test anxiety in the framework of reflection of the Japanese pioneer. It has also been observed that the most efficient period for the implementation of this method is the period of concrete transactions, that problems must be differentiated by class level, and that the method is not successoriented (note-based). In this context, it is suggested that practitioners and researchers use different teaching methods embodied by art, such as the method investigated in this research,
in various disciplines.
